Broadway will be closed nightly in the coming weeks for the demolition of the old Interstate 95 bridge.
The contractor, NEI, will begin demolition of the old northbound bridge over Broadway beginning Sunday, according to the city of Bangor. That work is expected to run through Dec. 6.
During the demolition, Broadway will be closed at I-95 from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sundays through Thursdays, with the exception of Nov. 27-29 for Thanksgiving, the city said in a Thursday alert.
Drivers should follow all signs and detour routes.
Those are the latest closures to accommodate ongoing interstate bridge work over I-95. That required closure of Broadway over several nights in June and July.
It’s the latest step toward the eventual replacement of the aging bridge carrying I-95 traffic over Broadway. The 152-foot steel girder bridge, built in 1960, is crossed about 50,000 times daily and is in “poor condition,” transportation officials have told the Bangor Daily News.
In recent years other I-95 bridges in Bangor have been replaced, including the Ohio Street bridge in 2020 and the Union Street bridge in 2016.
