A Capital Outlay Bill passing through state legislation means the state could see some serious renovation across multiple projects, and that includes Albuquerque. The people we spoke with say this is bigger than people realize and it’s an investment for the state on a level like no other. If this Capital Outlay Bill is signed by the governor, 300 projects across the city would receive roughly $170 million, which would go to projects across Albuquerque.That includes places like the state fairgrounds. “This property is so important to the people of New Mexico,” Dan Mourning with Expo New Mexico said.He said $6 million would be used to improve aging infrastructure on the 236-acre property.Mourning says it would also be the jumpstart they need to expand security, public safety, and the overall environment.“We’ve been making improvements over the years, but this is a good chunk of money to get us to do those projects that we’ve been waiting to get done,” Mourning said.Other projects include the Albuquerque BioPark, Balloon Fiesta Park, and education. Cinnamon Blair, with the University of New Mexico, says the university could use the money to upgrade maintenance, equipment, and safety. In addition, it could benefit anyone at all UNM branches.“Our Capital Outlay is in service to New Mexico and in service to our missions and the public,” Mourning said.UNM could get over $40 million to use for their investments. Blair says this type of money is critical for education in the state.“We want to make sure all of our students in New Mexico are successful and they have to have an environment which they can thrive,” Blair said. If the governor decides to approve this funding, the people receiving the money say they would spend it with purpose.“I’m just telling you right now, you give us the money, we’re going to spend it well,” Mourning said.
