Berlin (dpa) – 175 years after the March Revolution, Berlin is staging a “Weekend of Democracy” to commemorate the street battles of 18 and 19 March 1848. Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Governing Mayor Franziska Giffey will be opening the project on Saturday at the historic site at the Friedrichstraße/Jägerstraße crossroads in Berlin’s Mitte district. There will also be numerous events, exhibitions, guided tours and art installations throughout the weekend to mark the 175th anniversary.
Minister of State for Culture Claudia Roth said that the March Revolution was one of the most important events in the history of German democracy. Protests had broken out in many cities of the German Confederation in 1848. Roth stressed that courageous people had taken to the streets for freedom, democracy, equality and human rights. In Berlin, the protests escalated on 18 and 19 March 1848 into street battles that cost several people their lives.
