MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (KRON) – All Northern California schools affiliated with the Seventh-day Adventist Church (SDA) will be closed on Thursday after a shooting at a school in Butte County, the church announced. Two kindergarteners were injured in the shooting, and the suspected shooter took his own life.
“Our students, faculty, and staff at Feather River have been reunited with their families. Two of our students are being treated for their injuries. Join us as we lift up these children and their families in prayer. On Thursday, the Northern California Conference of the Seventh-day Adventist Church will close its schools to allow everyone to spend time with their families,” Kevin Lampe with SDA said.
There was no police presence at Mountain View Academy Wednesday night, but Mountain View police say they will be providing extra security.
It is one of several schools in the Bay Area operated by the Seventh Day Adventist Church – just like the one where a school shooting left two young students critically injured in Butte County.
In response, Mountain View Police Chief Scott Nelson released a statement saying that in the upcoming days, there will be extra officers patrolling Mountain View schools and Mountain View Academy.
Butte County’s sheriff announced that investigators believe Feather River Adventist School in Oroville may have been a targeted attack because of its affiliation with the denomination.
“We sent an alert out to law enforcement agencies throughout the state of California,” Sheriff Kony Honea said.
Along with the statewide alert, Gov.Gavin Newsom put out a statement expressing his condolences.
“Once again, a community is shattered by senseless gun violence,” he said in part.
There was an adult volleyball game Wednesday night at Mountain View Academy. It was not affiliated with the school, but KRON4 spoke to one man who was playing and said it was deeply disturbing to know that two kindergarteners were shot.
