NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — St. Joseph’s altars are being set up across the Greater New Orleans region honoring Saint Joseph, spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary and earthly father of Jesus.
The St. Joseph altars or tables are a Sicilian tradition serving as a thank you for Joseph’s intercession during a horrific drought as the people prayed for relief.
St. Joseph’s Day first began in 1880 when Sicilian immigrants first settled in New Orleans. It’s celebrated on the 19th day of every March, which is the day believed to be the date of St. Joseph’s death.
The Archdiocese of New Orleans said the alter fulfills a promise made to St. Joseph for an answered prayer.
Construction of a traditional alter is in the shape of the cross, “with the three levels honoring the Holy Trinity. A statue or picture of Joseph, often seen holding the baby Jesus stands at the center of the highest tier with flowers surrounding him.”
