(KRON) — The East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) is warning residents of people pretending to be EBMUD representatives and asking to enter people’s homes. These false representatives have shown up at people’s doors saying they need to test their tap water in Richmond and Oakland, according to the agency.
“These are not EBMUD employees,” the utility said in a news release.
EBMUD said its maintenance employees will never ask to enter your home. Workers repairing pipelines in your neighborhood may knock on your door to notify you about work in the area, “but will never ask to enter your home,” EBMUD said.
In the event of a plumbing inspection, a water conservation audit, or a tap water test, EBMUD employees will schedule a visit. “If this visit is not scheduled or if you are suspicious, do not open the door,” EBMUD said.
Many EBMUD employees are uniformed, although not all. However, all employees of the utility carry identification with their name, photo, and employee number visible. All maintenance vehicles are clearly marked with the EBMUD logo.
EBMUD recommends that if you suspect someone is impersonating one of its employees, you call the utility at 1-866-403-2683 to confirm. If an EBMUD employee is at your door and asks to come in, ask for their identification and the purpose of their visit.
