NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The New Orleans Police Department provided more details about several shootings that happened over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. NOPD officials say they are investigating nine separate shootings that left four dead and 10 injured.
“We know that some of the gunfire exchange that occurred were with people who are not from here. These are not our locals who are coming down and settling their beefs,” said NOPD Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick.
According to the NOPD, three of the shootings took place in one of the busiest spots in the city, the French Quarter. The first shooting happened at 7:30 p.m. in the 200 block of Bourbon Street. A fight broke out, causing a large stampede to form. An unknown suspect then fired shots into a crowd. A 15-year-old was shot in the chest.
“We have several leads right now. We have good video and witnesses that we’re combing through and that we’re, working to get this case solved,” said NOPD Captain Lejon Roberts.
About an hour later, in the 1000 block of Canal Street, several men and women were fighting when gunfire erupted. An 18-year-old was shot in the back. A nearby officer rendered aid while the suspects fled the scene.
Police believe both shootings are connected due to surveillance video showing the groups interacting.
Six hours later, around 2 a.m. on Sunday, police were called to a third shooting. Two men began firing at each other during a fight in the 700 block of Canal Street. The suspects were not believed to be hit, but four bystanders were shot as a result.
“These two individuals fled after they fired several rounds at each other.”
Police also named a person of interest in the death of the 3-year-old boy who was killed after he accidentally shot himself. Tatisha Refuge was allegedly in possession of the gun at the time and fled the scene shortly after the incident.
Police say she turned herself in Monday afternoon. She is being charged with negligent homicide. The parents of the toddler have been cleared of child negligence.
