
UC San Diego ranks ninth in the world on the 2024 Highly Cited Researchers list, it was announced Tuesday.
UCSD received 56 recognitions on the list, which highlights researchers who “have demonstrated significant and broad influence in their field(s) of research” and have authored papers that rank in the top 1% of citations for their fields and publication year, according to Clarivate, an analytics company,
School researchers from a variety of fields were recognized, including four with distinctions in more than one field.
UC San Diego was the only University of California campus in the top 10. The Highly Cited Researchers list includes more than 6,600 researchers from institutions in 59 countries and regions.
“This recognition affirms the extraordinary contributions of our faculty members whose pioneering work is advancing human knowledge and addressing some of the most pressing challenges of our time,” ” Chancellor Pradeep Khosla said. “Their influence extends far beyond the lab, helping to shape global innovations in health care, sustainability and technology.”
UCSD also has one of only 22 researchers globally who were recognized in three or more fields. Rob Knight, director of the Center for Microbiome Innovation and a Citation Laureate for work deemed to be of Nobel class, this year whose work was noted in three fields: molecular biology and genetics, biology and biochemistry, and microbiology.
The Highly Cited Researchers list is also one of six indicators used to evaluate schools on the Academic Ranking of World Universities list, which assesses an institution’s global research standing.
UCSD was ranked third among U.S. public universities on the 2024 academic ranking, behind UC Berkeley and UCLA.
