According to a release from New Mexico State Police, on November 18, around 9:30 p.m. an officer conducted a welfare check on a vehicle stopped on the side of I-40 just east of Tucumcari. An officer says he spotted Yazzie urinating on the side of the road and flashed his lights at him. Police say Yazzie got in his car and sped away before officers found him about 30 minutes later at a gas station. The officer tried to stop Yazzie, but he reversed his vehicle, pinning the officer between his car and a gas pump.
Yazzie fled again and was eventually stopped when an officer used a PIT maneuver. Yazzie was arrested after a short foot pursuit. Police say Yazzie admitted to drinking before getting behind the wheel, he had a revoked driver’s license and was on parole for four other DWI convictions. He is facing charges for DWI, aggravated assault on an officer and aggravated fleeing.
