A Pomeranian was so excited about going paddle boarding that he couldn’t wait for the board to hit the water before getting on it, and internet users are obsessed.
In a viral TikTok video shared on Saturday by @jadenedge, the pup, Scar, can be seen wearing a life jacket as he gets ready to go paddle boarding at the lake with his owner. However, he’s so keen that, instead of waiting for his owner to give him the green light, he just jumps on it the first chance he gets.
“He can’t even wait until the board hits the water,” reads layover text in the clip. A caption shared with the post says: “This is the first time I have ever managed to keep him from jumping in.”
While most dogs have the ability to swim, not all of them know how to, but they can easily learn with some appropriate training, according to veterinarian website Hastings Vet.
Some dogs, including Labrador retrievers, Portuguese water dogs, Irish water spaniels, poodles, Newfoundlands, and Irish setters were selectively bred to retrieve prey for their owners, and so they are incredible natural swimmers.
However, if your dog can’t swim, you can easily teach them. Knowing how to swim is a very valuable skill for canines, especially if the weather gets hot in the summer where you live, which could cause dehydration and overheating in dogs.
A Dogster article medically reviewed by Dr. Lauren Demos says that the first thing you should do when teaching a dog to swim is to get them a life jacket; this is crucial in the beginning and should be kept on even when they become experts.
Then, starting in shallow waters, you can encourage them with a floater, rewarding every entry to create a positive association. You should always closely supervise and support your dog; it is very important never to leave them alone in the water.
As they get more confident, you can gradually increase the depth. Take breaks from the water when you spend multiple hours training, to avoid dehydration.
Before introducing your pup to swimming, it’s also a good idea to contact your veterinarian to establish whether your dog is actually fit for it.

The video quickly went viral on social media and has so far received over 2.9 million views and more than 322,300 likes on the platform.
