DENVER (KDVR) — U.S. Marshals from Colorado tracked a Montrose man to New Mexico for a warrant charging him with child sexual assault, child prostitution and indecent exposure.
The U.S. Marshals Service for the District of Colorado began its investigation on Nov. 12, learning that Zachary Kyle Baca was potentially in Arizona or New Mexico with a “known female associate” and two children, according to an agency release.
On Nov. 14, the agency learned that Baca was traveling in New Mexico on Interstate 40. A fugitive team was deployed to locate Baca.
At 3 p.m., investigators were able to identify Baca as the driver of the vehicle but did not stop him due to safety concerns for the public, female associate and two children in the vehicle. The team made its move when Baca stopped at a gas station off Interstate 25 in Bernalillo, New Mexico.
U.S. Marshals surveilled the immediate area and saw Baca enter the gas station. When he left the store, U.S. Marshals arrested him without incident.
“The Montrose Police Department is grateful for the collaboration and cooperation with the US Marshals Service, which resulted in the quick apprehension of Mr. Baca,” Montrose Police Chief Blaine Hall said in a U.S. Marshal’s release. “Interagency collaboration, as in this example, greatly improves public safety and prevented further harm to the victims, or potential victims, in this investigation.”
Baca was booked into the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center on an out-of-state fugitive complaint. The female associate had no warrants and was released at the scene with the two children.
“This is another great example of the effectiveness of our fugitive task forces across the country. Working closely with our local, state and federal partners towards a common goal allowed us to rapidly take a violent sexual predator into custody who had crossed state lines,” said U.S. Marshal for the District of Colorado Kirk Taylor. “I’d like to thank our teammates in New Mexico for their hard work, their efforts safely brought this fugitive into custody.”
