FORT COLLINS, Colo. (KDVR) — A single father in Fort Collins lost everything in a fire, but now loved ones are hoping to help bring his family back together under one roof.
Last Wednesday, Cory Schneider left work and came home to flames and smoke consuming everything he’d worked to provide for his family. According to fire officials, the fire was accidental and the cause was electrical. It started in the area of the stove and Schneider thinks his dog may have hit the knob.
“I jumped out and the rest is a blur,” Schneider said. “I ended up kicking down the door and my neighbor’s husband was right there with me, and we just, we proceeded to try to save my family.”
The single father quickly found out his kids weren’t home yet and went to rescue his three dogs, two rabbits and bird, which were inside.
“It’s breathtaking, It’s devastating,” Schneider said “It’s been me and my daughter for about 14 years. She’ll be 15 here in three weeks. My stepson, I’ve still been an avid part of his life. He lost all of his stuff. My daughter, all of her stuff. It was just very smoke-damaged.”
Because of the age of the house, Schneider isn’t sure how much will be covered by insurance.
“It was rumored the insurance was only going to cover about $200 bucks so I don’t know,” Schneider said. “I can usually find a word for just about anything. I’ve got no words, It’s just one of those things where we rebuild from and life goes on.”
Loved ones have created a GoFundMe to try to help Schneider during this time.
