Veterans move front and center this San Diego weekend, with festivals celebrating film, food and trains too – not to mention a dip into Christmas. Are you ready?
The San Diego Asian Film Festival continues with more than 130 films from 30 countries, including All That We Love, starring Margaret Cho, at 5:30 p.m. Sunday. But if you like things more local, try the comedy, “Extremely Unique Dynamic,” at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, from a Mira Mesa High alum. The festival runs through Nov. 15. Full passes cost $325, a six-pack of films, $75, and individual screenings, $15.
The San Diego Food + Wine Festival, which concludes this weekend, features wineries and over 70 celebrated chefs, farmers and fishermen. On Friday, there’s the Grand Decant at the Julep Venue near Old Town; Saturday, the Grand Tasting at Embarcadero Marina Park North and Sunday at Liberty Station, the Grand Fiesta, with an oyster “shuck off,” taco contest and foods that celebrate the region’s cross-border culinary influence.
The Train Song Festival at Old Poway Park features a main stage with music from San Diego Folk Heritage, model railroad layouts, museum tours and rides aboard the 1907 Steam Engine. In addition, browse hand-crafted items at the artisan market at the free fest, which starts at 10 a.m. Saturday.
The Sound at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, nearing its second anniversary, hosts Modest Mouse for the “Good News for People Who Love Bad News Anniversary” tour. Resale tickets for the 8 p.m. show start at $86.
The University Heights Arts Association hosts the 17th annual Taste of University Heights with almost 20 businesses participating, some offering samples, others showing off art and other wares. Online tickets cost $35, and day-of, prices rise to $40, with tickets available at Kairoa Brewing Co., 4601 Park Blvd. It starts at noon Sunday.
You just made it through Halloween. And now Christmas is coming on quick. A San Diego holiday tradition, the Old Globe’s 27th annual production of Dr. Seuss’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas!, again featuring Andrew Polec in the title role, officially opens Sunday (though you may enjoy a preview on Friday or Saturday). The family favorite runs through Dec. 31.
Monday bonus! Celebrate veterans for their service at a parade or two:
- 9:30 a.m. – The day starts out with a parade, at Woodward Avenue and Broadway, leading to the Escondido Vet Fest at American Legion Post 149. Starting at noon, the fest includes a ceremony, Kids’ Zone, military displays and free lunch for active-duty military at the post.
- 10 a.m. – The San Diego Veterans Day Parade heads down Harbor Drive along San Diego Bay leading to the USS Midway Museum. Three World War II veterans, all over 100 years old, will lead the way to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day.
- 10:15 a.m. – San Diego Fleet Week culminates with the Veterans Day Boat Parade. The procession welcomes vessels of all sizes, with honors going to top decorated boats that highlight one of the military’s five branches, along with the most patriotic. See the parade from Shelter Island, Harbor Island, the Embarcadero, Seaport Village or Tidelands Park.
