A video has gone viral showing the amazing moment a woman walked downstairs only to find a huge bear rummaging around her kitchen looking for food.
Jazmin Montalvo posted a video on TikTok (@jaz.montalvo) showing the moment she wandered down the stairs of her home in Truckee, California, only to find that she had an intruder. The unexpected guest was a large bear, seen roaming around the kitchen and searching inside the fridge for snacks.
In just a couple of days, the video has gone viral with more than 17.2 million views and over 2.4 million likes on TikTok. The clip shocked and terrified many social media users, with many amazed that the wild animal knew exactly where to look for the food.
Newsweek has contacted Montalvo via TikTok for comment.
Montalvo and her companions were cautious of getting too close to the bear, as they opted to stay on the staircase and recorded from a distance. Thankfully, once the bear managed to find some scraps to eat, it hurried off and scurried out the house.
As wild bears are always in search of food, they will be able to sniff out garbage bags, bird feeders, or scraps of food that have been left on the grill. These scents can bring them closer to a person’s property, and even inside the house if they can sense more food within.
According to BearWise, an education and outreach program supported by the Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies, you should never approach or run from a bear. During any bear encounter, it’s best to give the animal a clear escape route by leaving doors open, and never lock it inside.
If it’s in your backyard, keep a safe distance away and make loud noises by shouting or banging pots and pans to scare it away. Alternatively, if you see a bear in the woods or in public, you should stand still and move away quietly in the opposite direction. Never run from a bear, as this could trigger a reaction to chase after you.
If a bear approaches you or starts following you, BearWise recommends standing your ground and make yourself look bigger by raising arms in the air. When with other people, it’s also important to stay together rather than go in separate directions.
