The city of San Diego announced Monday it will allocate $4.4 million from the California Encampment Resolution Fund to help move at least 131 people experiencing homelessness into stable housing.
The funds will be directed to the Supportive Services and Temporary Housing Financial Assistance Program through a contract with the nonprofit National Alliance on Mental Health San Diego.
The program will focus on people living near Interstate 15, City Heights and the San Diego River, offering housing placement, rental assistance and other support services.
Mayor Todd Gloria emphasized that the initiative aims to provide long-term solutions, saying, “Housing ends homelessness.”
This initiative follows a similar effort in Downtown San Diego, where 63 people remain housed 10 months after extensive outreach.
The city has received three Encampment Resolution Fund grants from California to provide financial assistance and housing for those living in encampments. The funds also support outreach efforts offering services and diversion programs to help individuals end their homelessness, officials said.
