NORWICH, Conn. (WTNH) — Attendees at a Norwich Free Academy (NFA) football game had to be evacuated after a picture with a threat was posted to the social media app Snapchat.
Just before 9:00 Friday night, two FBI divisions notified the Norwich Police Department of an active threat. Officials said a picture from the football stands was posted to Snapchat accompanied by a “threat to commit a shooting.”
Norwich officers already stationed at the game began to evacuate several hundred attendees, including athletes, band members, cheerleaders, and spectators. Officers thoroughly searched all open buildings at the school, and no threat was found.
Authorities, with the help of NFA’s resource officers, were able to locate and apprehend the suspect. The suspect is a juvenile who police say is not a student at NFA.
The juvenile suspect is not allowed to attend school pending a review by the Norwich Board of Education.
“All threats are taken seriously by the Norwich Police Department and will be thoroughly investigated, and those responsible will be held accountable,” says Norwich Lieutenant Meikle.
Norwich police are asking anyone with information on criminal activities to contact them at 860-886-5561, where an anonymous tip can also be left.
