The Screen Actors Guild Awards is sort of a unique event on the Hollywood ceremony circuit, in that it is an awards show in which actors—at least, the ones who are dues-paying SAG members—nominate and vote for one another, in categories across both TV and film. So even in the vast realm of celebrity-driven Hollywood events, the SAGs tend to be particularly star-centric. This is especially true when big ensemble casts reunite on the red carpet in their finest formalwear—and there was lots of that last night, with the film Everything Everywhere All at Once, HBO hit The White Lotus, and ABC’s Abbott Elementary all taking home ensemble trophies. Ultimately, the SAG Awards are all about actors getting dressed up for other actors.
And though actors are usually pretty good at getting dressed up in general, many leading men took last night’s show as an opportunity to really flex their (or their stylists’) prowess, showing off plenty of edged-up suiting, groovy silhouettes, and weirdly hunky detailing. There were turtlenecks and polka dots. There were big ol’ peaked lapels and teensy bow ties. There were Connell chains and, in the case of John Krasinski (!), a pinstripe suit with a pocket watch fob (!!).
It was the best menswear carpet of the year so far, because more and more Hollywood guys are just…going for it.
Here are some of those best looks from the 2023 SAG Awards:
