Blue Bird Latin Eatery
3000 Loyola Drive, Kenner
New Orleans is home to many excellent Honduran restaurants, but a new one in Kenner is a particularly charming addition. Blue Bird Latin Eatery is a woman-owned, all-day cafe serving brunch, lunch, and dinner, Honduran specialties like baleadas, pupusas, tacos Hondureños, and pollo con tajadas, a fried chicken dish with slaw and fried green bananas also known as pollo chuco. Owner Nahomi Gomez has created a bright, calming space dotted with lush greenery, touches of wicker and rattan, and blue-and-white, Talavera-style tile.
Pulcinella!
1300 St. Bernard Avenue, Seventh Ward
Well-known New Orleans burlesque performer Bella Blue has branched out for Pulcinella!, partnering with her husband, Andy Principe, friend J.D. Solomon, and chef Matty Hayes for the new restaurant. Here, Bella is “Headmistress of Hospitality,” and runs the upstairs Original Nite Cap Speakeasy for drinks and performances. Downstairs, Pulcinella! takes over for the Green Room, which closed in May, where Hayes serves dishes like oyster and artichoke soup; red gray meatballs with whipped ricotta; seafood cannelloni; cavatelli alla norma; eggplant Parmesan; and smoked pork steak with creamed broccoli rabe. Friendly, pretty, and affordable, it’s open for dinner from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Thursday through Monday.
Cajun Flames
1117 Decatur Street, French Quarter
A new bright spot in tourist-centric Decatur Street dining, Cajun Flames is from the much-celebrated chefs behind modern Indian restaurant LUFU NOLA. Sarthak Samantray, Aman Kota, and Sachin Darade opened the casual seafood restaurant in October in the former home of Saint John (which has relocated to the CBD), branching out significantly from the cuisine they’re known for. Here you’ll find seafood gumbo, alligator tails, barbecue shrimp and grits, grilled octopus, steak frites, and oysters four ways. It’s open for lunch and dinner, Thursday through Tuesday.
Get Stuffed
2917 Magazine Street, Uptown
This tucked-away weekend spot is from Sno-La Snowballs, serving snack bar-style food alongside slices of Debbie Does Doberge cake and sno-balls. Savory snacks include cajun boudin nachos, stuffed peppers, and tuna salad croissant sandwiches, but sweet treats rule the menu here. It’s open and serving in the courtyard Thursday through Monday from 1 to 8 p.m. for Magazine Street strollers looking for a mid-shop snack.
