SPRING HILL, Fla. — Three people were hurt and one person is in custody following a shooting Sunday night, according to Hernando County Sheriff Al Nienhuis.
Nienhuis says those injured were in a vehicle totaling five occupants. The sheriff says the incident started at Mariner Cay Apartments in Spring Hill where the vehicle encountered the shooter.
Nienhuis does not know if there was a verbal exchange between the shooter and the occupants in the vehicle, but he says the shooter began firing and struck three people in the vehicle.
“I’m not even sure what interaction, if any, took place,” the sheriff said during a Sunday night press conference.
Nienhuis says the vehicle sped off to a nearby Publix parking lot in the Mariner Commons Shopping Center.
“It originally came out as a possible active shooter or active assailant and I think that was a result of some victims running into Publix,” he said.
Nienhuis says he believes there was only one shooter, and that suspect is currently in custody. He did not elaborate on the extent of the victims’ injuries.
“If that pans out and everything holds true that there was one shooter, there should be no more danger to the public,” he said.
