Two Riverside County women were arrested for allegedly threatening to deport a man if he did not pay them $100,000.
On March 4, Riverside County deputies received a report that a victim in Rancho Mirage had been extorted for over $100,000.
The victim said the suspect had reportedly threatened to have him deported if he did not pay her the money as requested,
Authorities later identified the suspect as Ilivia Yvette Lopez, 43, of Hemet. On March 25, Lopex was located on the 32000 block of Bob Hope Drive and taken into custody.
An accomplice, Bertha Gasso, 67, of Hemet, was also found with Lopez and was also taken into custody.
Both suspects were arrested for multiple theft-related charges, including extortion.
“Due to the large amount of money involved, a formal “White Collar” crime enhancement will be sought with the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office,” officials said.
No further details were released as the investigation continues.
Anyone with information on the case is asked to call Deputy Paull with the Rancho Mirage Special Enforcement Team at 760-836–1600.
“The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office encourages the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities, authorities said in a statement. “If you or someone you know is being threatened or coerced, do not hesitate to contact law enforcement. Extortion is a serious crime, and no one should be made to feel fearful or pressured into giving up their hard-earned money.”
