DENVER (KDVR) — An 18-year-old man from Aurora was killed in a crash on Interstate 70 over the weekend.
Colorado State Patrol said its troopers responded to a report of a wrong-way driver on I-70 near Watkins around 12:15 a.m. Sunday. CSP said the driver was traveling west in the eastbound lanes of the interstate.
Once a trooper arrived on the scene, CSP said they noticed a Subaru Impreza parked the wrong direction on the inside shoulder of eastbound I-70.
According to CSP, the trooper was traveling west and tried to get the driver’s attention with a spotlight, however, they drove away proceeding west in the eastbound lanes.
CSP said the trooper turned his emergency lights on and followed the wrong-way driver from the right side of the road. After several minutes of this, CSP said the driver crashed head-on with a semi-truck.
The wrong-way driver was killed on the scene, and the truck driver was uninjured.
CSP said the 18-year-old’s identity will be released by the Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office.
The Westminster Police Department is leading an investigation with the 17th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team, CSP said.
