MORNING HEADLINES | Twenty-five rhesus macaque primates returned safely over the weekend to the Yemassee lab they broke out of Wednesday, but 18 remain on the lam, officials said Sunday evening.
“All are in good health,” the head of the lab told reporters. “Others remain close by in trees.” Crews from the Alpha Genesis research facility are continuing to try to trap the monkeys using food as a lure.
The Wednesday escape of the 43 monkeys came after an employee didn’t fully lock a door as she fed them, officials said. The 25 monkeys that returned over the weekend were in good health, according to reports.
The story has made headlines across the globe. Yemassee straddles Hampton and Beaufort counties about 60 miles west of Charleston.
The herd at the lab consists completely of young females weighing around 6 or 7 pounds each, according to Alpha Genesis. None of the animals have been used in testing and are “too young” to carry disease, officials reported.
As news of the escape spread, people went, ahem, bananas online with jokes and various memes about the monkeys. One Yemassee business, for example, started making T-shirts showing a silhouette of a monkey and the words, “Straight outta Yemassee.”
