BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Ten more Buffalo and Western New York churches will remain open following the Vatican accepting their appeals.
The following churches will continue to hold mass:
- St. Bridgid, Bergen
- St. Rose of Lima, Forestville
- Our Lady of the Rosary, Wilson
- Infant of Prague, Cheektowaga
- St. Aloysius Gonzaga, Cheektowaga
- Holy Spirit, Buffalo
- Ascension, Batavia
- St. Bernadette, Orchard Park
- Blessed Sacrament, Tonawanda
- St. John XXIII, West Seneca
The announcements were made by Save Our Buffalo Churches, an advocacy group focusing on keeping area churches open.
Last September, the Diocese of Buffalo announced that nearly 100 Western New York parishes and churches would close or merge as the Diocese attempts to pay $100 million to settle hundreds of sexual abuse claims filed under the Adult Survivors Act. The Diocese previously confirmed that the net sale proceeds will go into funding the settlements.
There are now 12 churches that will remain open, at least for now, following the announcements on Monday night. In February, the Vatican decided that St. Michael, a downtown Buffalo church, would remain open for now. That followed an announcement the previous week that Holy Cross, located on Seventh Street on Buffalo’s West Side, will remain open.
